FG, Lagos Launch 24/7 Power Zone to End Electricity Outage

The Federal Government and the Lagos State Government have agreed to work together to improve electricity supply across Lagos through a new 24/7 Energy Zone pilot programme.

The initiative is aimed at providing more stable and reliable electricity to homes, businesses and industries across the Lagos corridor while addressing some of the technical, commercial and regulatory challenges affecting power supply.

The agreement was reached during a high-level technical meeting between the Minister of Power, Joseph Tegbe, and Lagos State Governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu, at Lagos House, Marina.

According to reports, Lagos has been selected as the first location for the Federal Government's 24/7 Energy Zones pilot programme. The initiative is expected to be extended to other major economic corridors, including Abuja-Kaduna-Kano and Enugu-Port Harcourt.

FG Targets Reliable Electricity Supply in Lagos

The Minister of Power said the Federal Ministry of Power had engaged electricity distribution companies operating along the Lagos corridor and obtained commitments aimed at increasing power offtake and improving the reliability of electricity delivered to consumers.

The government said the programme will focus on four major areas: grid stabilisation, market liquidity, grid expansion, and governance and regulatory harmonisation.

These areas are considered important to improving the entire electricity value chain, from generation and transmission to distribution and payment.

Joint Committee Set Up to Drive 24/7 Power Initiative

As part of efforts to move the programme from planning to implementation, the Federal Government and Lagos State have established a Joint Technical Committee.

The committee is expected to identify outstanding technical and operational challenges and recommend practical steps for implementing the 24/7 Energy Zone in Lagos.

The committee will report to a steering committee headed by Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu and co-chaired by Minister Joseph Tegbe. Representatives from key electricity agencies and regulators are also expected to participate in the implementation process.

Why Lagos Was Chosen

Lagos is one of Nigeria's biggest commercial and industrial centres and has a very high demand for electricity.

The state government has previously highlighted the need to significantly increase available power supply to support households, businesses and industries.

The Federal Government's Energy Zone approach is designed to focus resources on areas with high electricity demand and improve the ability of distribution companies to receive and deliver available power to consumers.

What the 24/7 Energy Zone Could Mean for Businesses

Reliable electricity could provide major benefits for businesses operating in Lagos.

Small businesses, manufacturers, technology companies, shops and other commercial operators depend heavily on electricity to operate their businesses and reduce reliance on alternative sources of power.

A more reliable electricity supply could potentially help businesses reduce operating costs associated with diesel and petrol-powered generators while improving productivity.

However, the success of the initiative will depend on improvements across generation, transmission, distribution, metering and the wider electricity market.

FG and Lagos Promise Stronger Collaboration

Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu welcomed the Federal Government's intervention and said Lagos State was committed to working with the Ministry of Power to develop practical solutions to the state's longstanding electricity challenges.

The governor said the state wants to develop a bankable, collaborative and competitive electricity market that can attract investment and improve power supply for residents and businesses.

The initiative is also expected to strengthen cooperation between federal agencies, the Lagos State Government, electricity regulators, distribution companies and other stakeholders in the power sector.

Lagos 24/7 Power: What Nigerians Should Know

Although the programme is designed to deliver reliable, round-the-clock electricity, the latest announcement does not mean that all of Lagos has immediately started receiving uninterrupted power.

The authorities are still working through technical and operational issues, with the newly established committees expected to coordinate the next steps.

The government has therefore positioned the 24/7 Energy Zone as a structured intervention that will require improvements throughout the electricity supply chain before the full benefits can be achieved.

Other Areas to Benefit

Following the Lagos pilot, the Federal Government has identified the Abuja-Kaduna-Kano and Enugu-Port Harcourt corridors as other areas targeted under the broader Energy Zones initiative.

The goal is to create a framework that can eventually be scaled to other major commercial and industrial centres across Nigeria.

Conclusion

The launch of the 24/7 Energy Zone pilot in Lagos marks a significant step in the Federal Government and Lagos State Government's efforts to address persistent electricity challenges.

With a joint technical committee now established, attention will turn to implementation and whether the initiative can translate government plans into more dependable electricity for residents, businesses and industries.

For Lagos residents and business owners, the success of the programme could provide an important boost to economic activity and reduce the impact of frequent electricity outages.
