Nigeria’s afrobeats superstar Davido has opened up about his love for music, saying money is not his motivation for choosing the path.
Speaking with Nigerian music executive, Bankuli backstage in Toronto after a frenetic show during his 5alivetour, Davido said money is not his drive for choosing music.
“It’s not for the money. I got billions of dollars waiting for me if I don’t work a day in my life today,” he said, recounting his journey into music.
“Whether it’s 100 people, 10 people, or 19,000 people, it’s the same sh** for me. I love it. I love my job,” he added.
The superstar expressed gratitude to those who have supported his career – which he admits can be tasking sometimes.

“I’m grateful to God, my friends, everyone who helped me, even people I don’t even remember,” he said. “And I’m grateful to myself for being hardworking.”
Davido said that, “There’s individual strength and mental ability that goes into this type of work, especially with a lot of odds against me. So it’s like, f**k I got to do it.”
Davido also reminisced about his humble beginnings, recalling freestyling as a teenager for music executive Don Jazzy and veteran rapper D’banj back in Atlanta, Georgia, in the US.
“When Jazzy was leaving, he looked back at me like, ‘This boy has something’,” he said.
Davido also spoke about how he drove his dad’s Rolls Royce at 15 to go buy McDonald’s just so he could freestyle.
He said, “Most people get their biggest songs at the beginning of their career. I was getting tired ni**. Ni** said no we ain’t going nowhere—and more to come.”
Now, with massive shows and packed arenas, Davido’s passion continues to grow.
The singer is confident that next year he will perform to a 60,000 audience.
